Social Justice
The Social Action Team coordinates opportunities for UUGP members to express concerns and make suggestions regarding social injustice and recommends and supports activities to raise awareness and help redress such issues.
Locally, the SA team recommends support for organizations that help individuals cope with hardships. It identifies various agencies that are recognized as providers of direct physical or personal assistance to such individuals in Grants Pass and elsewhere in the Rogue Valley, such as the Food Bank, Coalition for Kids, Planned Parenthood, Josephine Community Libraries, Women’s Crisis Support Team, Wildlife Images and others. Each month the UUGP fellowship supports one of these organizations for a special Outreach Offering.
More broadly, it advocates for greater economic and social equality for all, more democratic processes, and addresses such issues as climate change, excessive incarceration, environmental degradation, and excessive militarism. It participates in community events to raise awareness about these issues in regular public demonstrations, including the monthly Rally for Peace and Justice in front of the Courthouse, and by coordinating and staffing for informational meetings open to the public at the UUGP Center or elsewhere. It also includes organizations related to remediating such issues on its recommended list for Outreach Offerings, such as Health Care for ALL-Oregon (HCAO) and Southern Oregon Climate Action Network (SOCAN).
